Students in the Holland High School Applied Science 1 class recently counted trout eggs using a common scientific method and released fry (newly hatched trout) from their egg basket. The newly hatched trout burrow into the rocks at the bottom of the tank. This survival instinct allows wild trout to avoid predators in the wild while they are still attached to their yolk sacs. The Trout in the Classroom program is possible thanks to generous donations from the C.A.R.E. foundation and Trout Unlimited.

The class also took a field trip to Reinstein Woods with the ECC Environmental Science class. Students learned about the preserve and forest ecology from local environmental experts while touring the 200 acre preserve. The field trip was made possible by the Connect Kids Grants through the New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation.
